WASHINGTON, DC – The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) issued the following statement after the United States Supreme Court paved the way for marriage equality by declaring the Defense Against Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional and striking down Proposition 8, the California law banning same-sex marriage.

“Today is a monumental day for women and men across the country who have entered into the institution of marriage but struggled for equal treatment under the law. The Supreme Court agrees with a majority of Americans that we must put an end to this shameful discrimination.

“For decades, AFA’s commitment to equal treatment of all individuals, regardless of race, color, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression has not wavered. We are hopeful that today’s marriage equality decisions put our country on a path towards greater understanding and acceptance, and we will continue to advocate that same treatment for everyone.”
